
Three new charges of genocide and crimes against humanity have been filed against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 151 of her associates, including high-ranking party officials and police officers.
These charges relate to deaths of several individuals during the student-led mass uprising, which saw violent confrontations with law enforcement agencies.
The new cases bring the total number of charges against Hasina and her associates to 137, including 27 charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, along with 110 criminal cases, primarily involving murder.
One of the genocide cases filed on Thursday pertains to the death of Sheikh Fahmin Jafar, a first-year student at Tongi Government College, who was shot and killed near AB Market in the Azampur area of Uttara on July 18.
Another case was filed over the death of Mohammad Raihan, a first-year student at Gulshan College, who was fatally injured near BRAC University in Badda area on August 5.
The third case involved the death of Mohammad Shahjahan, who succumbed to bullet wounds on July 24 after being shot at near the Mohakhali Traffic Box on July 19.
All three cases were filed with the International Crimes Tribunal by the victims’ families.
In addition to the ICT cases, several other criminal cases were lodged against Hasina and her associates across different districts, primarily related to deaths that occurred during the uprising.
One such case was filed over the death of Mominul Islam Hridoy, a student killed during the anti-quota protests.
The victim’s father, Abu Bakar Siddiq, filed the complaint with Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saifuzzaman’s court on Wednesday, leading the court to order the Mirpur model police station to register it as a first information report.
A similar case was filed against Hasina and 11 others for the death of Faridpur Juba Dal leader Mandar Molla, who was killed in the Mirpur area during the same protests.
The victim’s wife, Sonia Akhtar, lodged the case with Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saifuzzaman’s court, which also ordered the complaint to be treated as an FIR.
Another case was filed against 148 individuals, including Hasina, over the killing of a man named Sohel Rana in the Kajla area of Jatrabari.
The victim’s brother, Jewel, filed the complaint with Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Shaheen Razo’s court, leading to an order for the Jatrabari police to accept it as an FIR.
Further reports from Rajshahi reveal that two more cases were filed on Wednesday against Hasina and her aides in connection with the deaths of two individuals who were among four people allegedly burnt to death when lawmaker Shahfiqul Islam Shimul’s residence in Natore was set on fire on August 5.
The cases were lodged by the victims’ families with the Natore Sadar police station.
Additionally, a case was filed against 163 people, including Hasina, for an alleged attempt to murder Shimul Ahmed, a deliveryman, during the anti-quota protests in Mirpur on July 19.
The victim himself lodged the complaint with Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saifuzzaman’s court, which ordered the local police to register it as an FIR.
According to the case statement, Shimul was shot in the thigh while participating in the protest.
