At least three people from Chakma and Tripura communities were killed in clashes at Dighinala and Khagrachari sadar in Khagrachari district in Bangladesh between Thursday afternoon and early hours of Friday.

The deceased were identified as Junan Chakma, 20, Dhananjoy Chakma, 60, and Rubel Tripura, 30.

Khagrachari Sadar Hospital resident doctor Riple Bappy Chakma said that Dhananjoy was brought from Dighinala on Thursday afternoon while Junan and Rubel were brought to the hospital after they were injured in Khagrachari sadar firing early Friday.

He also said that five people were admitted to the hospital while four people were referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.

Local people in Khagrachari sadar also heard sounds of indiscriminate gunshots throughout the night.

Confirming the matter, Khagrachari district additional superintendent of police Taufiqul Alam said that there was firing in some areas in the town Thursday night but those who opened fire were not identified.

‘We are investigating the incident. We can inform you only after conducting an investigation,’ he added.

Earlier, more than 200 houses and shops were set on fire during a clash between Bengali people and national minority communities in Boalkhali and Dighinala in Khagrachari hill district on Thursday.

The clash erupted at about 4:00pm when Bengali Chhatra Parishad brought out a procession protesting against the death of Md Mamun, who allegedly died in mob lynching in Khagrachari sadar early Wednesday.
