Dhaka courts on Friday placed additional deputy inspector general of police for Chattogram Range Mashiur Rahman on seven-day and police inspector Mazharul Islam on five-day remand in murder cases.

Former planning minister MA Mannan and Rongdhanu Group director and former vice-chairman of Rupganj upazilla Md Mizanur Rahman were also sent to jail in two separate cases.


Court officials said that Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saddam Hossain placed Mashiur Rahman on seven-day remand in a case filed over the death of trader Abdul Wadud on July 19 during the quota reform protests.

Earlier, a team of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan police arrested Mashiur in the airport area in the capital, in connection with the case filed with the New Market police station in Dhaka.

On August 21, Abdur Rahman, a brother-in-law of Wadud, filed the case with the New Market police station against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 129 others.

He was accused in several cases filed on charges of murder after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.

Mashiur was promoted to additional DIG from deputy commissioner recently.

He served as the deputy commissioner of Lalbagh Division of Detective Branch until August 5.

After the interim government came to power, Mashiur was attached to the Chattogram range DIG office from the DB after the fall of the Awami League government.

Police inspector Mazharul Islam was placed on five-day remand in the case lodged over the murder of Lord Hardinge Fazil Degree Madrassah student Arif in capital’s Jatrabari area on July 19.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tahmina Haque passed the order after police produced him before the court seeking 10-day remand for interrogation.

Mazharul was arrested at Armed Police Special Training Centre in Khagrachari on September 17.

Mazharul was posted at the Jatrabari police station during the anti-quota protests and was allegedly instrumental in carrying out indiscriminate shooting on the protesters in the Jatrabari Kutubkhali area.

Madrassah student Arif was shot in his eye and succumbed to his wounds on July 19.

Arif’s father Md Yusuf later filed the case with the Jatrabari police station.

Meanwhile, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saddam Hossain sent Rongdhanu Group director and former vice-chairman of Rupganj upazila Md Mizanur Rahman to jail in a case filed for allegedly demanding Tk 5 crore as extortion.

The court passed the order after the end of his two-day remand in the case.

On September 17, the DB arrested Mizanur in the Jamuna Future Park area in the capital in a case filed by Mahbub Rahman Modhu with the Khilkhet police station on April 30 against eight people for infiltrating into properties owned by East-West Property Development Limited and City Multi Agricultural Company on April 28.

Then, the accused also beat three security guards black and blue.

They also asked the guards to tell their bosses to give them Tk 5 crore as extortion.

Our Staff Correspondent from Sylhet reported that a Sunamganj court on Friday sent former planning minister MA Mannan to jail in a case filed in connection with an attack on a protest rally of students and mass people.

Mannan’s counsel Shafiqul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they submitted a petition seeking his bail after he was produced before the district judicial magistrate court at around 10:00am.

‘The judicial magistrate Mohammad Farhan Sakid did not hear in the petition as the concerned court, the Sunamganj Speedy Trial Tribunal, was closed on the weekend holiday and the judicial magistrate ordered to send him to jail,’ he said.

The plaintiff’s lawyer Mashuk Alam, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the police would file a petition later with the court to take the former minister on remand in the case to interrogate him in police custody.

On Thursday, a team of the Sunamganj police arrested the former planning minister at around 10:30pm at his home at Hijal Karach at Shantiganj upazila in the district.

Earlier on September 2, one Hafiz Ahmed, brother of an injured student of Doarabazar upazila in Sunamganj, filed a case against 99 people including MA Mannan for opening fire during the movement of students and mass people.
