Eggs and chicken were being sold at prices above the government-set rates on the kitchen markets in the Dhaka city on Friday.

The prices of vegetables also maintained an upward trend over the week due to a supply disruption caused by the recent heavy rain in the country.

The Department of Livestock Services on September 15 set the ‘reasonable prices’ for eggs, broiler chicken and sonalika variety of chicken at Tk 11.87 apiece, Tk 179.59 a kilogram and Tk 269.64 a kilogram respectively.

Traders said that almost immediately after the official rate setting, the prices of eggs and chicken surged on the wholesale market.

Retailers also said that the prices of certain vegetables and green chilies rose on the market due to recent heavy rains, which caused damage to farmland and created supply shortages.

The prices of eggs increased by Tk 3-5 a hali (four pieces) in the past one week and the item sold for Tk 53-55 a hali on the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.

The price of broiler chicken increased by Tk 10 a kilogram over the week and the item sold for Tk 185–190 a kilogram on the day.

Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 270–280 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

Despite ongoing efforts by the Directorate of National Consumers’ Rights Protection to monitor city markets, many traders continued to disregard the government-set prices for essential commodities.

The prices of some of the vegetables increased by Tk 10-20 a kilogram in the city over the week.

Aubergine sold for Tk 80-100 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 25–30 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 60-80 a kilogram, pointed guard for Tk 50–60 a kilogram and okra for Tk 50-60 a kilogram on Friday.
