The authorities of Dhaka University on Saturday formed a committee to evaluate different demands of the students, including activation of the central students’ union by banning partisan politics, a campus free from outsiders, and actions against those involved in attacking students during the mass uprising.

The five-member committee is headed by the university pro-vice-chancellor for administration, professor Sayema Haque Bidisha, and its member secretary is proctor associate professor Saifuddin Ahmed.


The other members are pro-vice-chancellor for academic affairs professor  Mamun Ahmed, treasurer professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and Salimullah Muslim Hall provost and the convener of DU provost committee associate professor Abdullah-AL-Mamun.

On September 19, the authorities of Dhaka University suspended all political activities of the university’s students, teachers, officers and employees on the campus.

The decision was taken at an urgent syndicate meeting chaired by vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmed Khan.

On Saturday, the authorities issued an office order regarding formation of the committee.

The order reads that the committee has been formed to evaluate demands of the coordinators of the Student Movement Against Discrimination platform and general students from all halls of residence.

The other demands are improvement in dining facilities and library management, eviction of floating vendors, controlling movements of vehicles coming from outside of the campus, improvement in the internal transport system, an increase in the number of seats in the halls and constructing new buildings, and free WiFi connections and high speed of internet facilities on the campus.

During the student-led quota reform movement in July, which later turned into a mass uprising forcing Sheikh Hasina to resign as prime minister and fled to India on August 5, students also demanded a ban on practice of partisan politics on university campuses.

Following that, so far authorities of different universities and colleges including Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Barishal University, Comilla University, Rajshahi University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Sylhet Agricultural University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, Noakhali Science and Technology University, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Pabna University of Science and Technology, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Bangladesh University of Textiles, Dhaka Medical College, and Chittagong Medical College banned on-campus politics following students’ demand.
