Mountaineer Shayla Parvin Bithi was allegedly attacked by some unidentified persons while crossing a footbridge at Dhanmondi in Dhaka on Saturday.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station officer-in-charge Mozammel Haque said that Bithi filed a general diary with the police station following the incident.

‘The closed-circuit television footage showed that an unidentified man was grabbing her hair. She fell on the stairs and was injured,’ said the OC, adding that she, however, did not recognise the attacker as she did not see them during the attack.

Appropriate legal action would be taken, he said.

Earlier, in a Facebook post, Bithi’s husband Taimur Faruk Tusher said that the attackers came from behind, grabbed Bithi’s hair, and started beating her severely.

‘Her lips were cut in the attack, and there are numerous marks of injury all over her body,’ he said, adding that police must find out the reason for the attack.

Mountaineer Shayla Bithi last climbed the Island Peak in the Himalayas in October 2021. She completed a basic mountaineering course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in India in 2016.

In May 2018, Bithi conquered the Lakpari Peak in Tibet, and the Durgesh Tashi Lapcha Pass in the Himalayas in May 2019.
