Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday said that a parliament elected by the people of the country was better for the radical change of the constitution or formulating a new constitution.
The party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, responding to a question on the interim government’s initiatives to reform the constitution, said that a revolutionary government should have been formed for taking the initiatives to reform the constitution.
‘But, that didn’t happen,’ he told reporters at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in Dhaka.
The BNP leader said that many issues were involved in the sectarian violence in Chittagong Hill Tracts.
‘I do not consider the incident in Chittagong Hill Tracts as an isolated incident.’
He said that taking advantage of vacuums, and geopolitics contributed a lot to the incidents.
‘I think, it is definitely a part of a conspiracy to destabilise the political landscape of Bangladesh and the interim government. Conspiracy to subvert the benefits of revolution is taking place. The ongoing process can be considered as an attempt to instigate a counter-revolution. Most importantly, there is an effort to initiate a process of depoliticisation,’ he said.
He said that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina was making remarks from a neighboring country. ‘Her words are also making an impact.’
‘Overall, the situation is not very comfortable. It’s quite uncomfortable...I can say there are valid reasons for concern,’ he said.
‘Besides, it seems to me that the interim government lacks experience in handling political issues. Delay in making decisions is creating more problems,’ Fakhrul said.
He believed that many problems were occurring as the interim government was not discussing with the political parties.
‘The people in charge of this government are technocrats, bureaucrats, and academicians. There are two student leaders and some NGO officials [in the government],’ he said.
‘After such changes in power in our country, a problem of governance arises. Various stakeholders arise. Opportunists want to take chances…Everyone wants to become closer to the new government. It’s a big problem,’ he added.
He pointed out that those who were in the main responsibilities of the fascist government were still in their positions.
