The Anti-Corruption Commission on Sunday decided to investigate former lawmakers Md Shaheen Chaklader and HM Ibrahim over allegations of amassing illegal wealth.

The commission also decided to investigate former deputy inspector general of police Md Abdul Baten for amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.

ACC director general (prevention) Akhtar Hossain said that ACC, based on the information gathered by the intelligence unit of the commission, took the decisions in a meeting at its headquarters in Dhaka.

According to the allegations, Shaheen Chaklader, a former lawmaker for Jashore-6 constituency, acquired illegal wealth through various irregularities and corruption by abusing power.

Shaheen was basically a contractor and used political influence to become the owner of a huge amount of assets.  He owns a luxurious 22-storey hotel named ‘The Zabeer Hotel International’ and a luxurious building named ‘White House’ in Jashore.

The former lawmaker acquired a huge amount of illegal wealth at home and abroad in the names of him and his family members through abuse of power, irregularities, and corruption.

The anti-graft watchdog decided to probe HM Ibrahim, a former lawmaker for Noakhali-1, as the commission, during its primary probe, found illegal wealth belonging to the ex-MP.

He amassed wealth beyond known sources of income by abusing power.

Ibrahim and his wife amassed wealth worth Tk 22.45 crore, including movable assets worth Tk 16.14 crore in his name, movable assets worth Tk 3.65 crore in the name of his wife, and immovable assets worth Tk 2.65 crore in his name, according to the allegation.

Besides, the commission decided to begin an inquiry against former DIG Md Abdul Baten over allegations of amassing illegal wealth through abuse of power.

ACC received information that Baten owned a lot of money deposited in different banks, and he owned a number of apartments in Bara Moghbazar, Ramna, Dhanmondi, Baridhara, Gulshan and Siddeshwari areas in Dhaka.

Apart from these, he also bought a plot in the name of his wife in the capital’s Purbachal and invested in a police housing society.

Baten allegedly also bought huge assets abroad.

He was working as the Rangpur Range DIG when Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed was killed in police firing during the quota reform movement on July 16.
