Bangladesh couldn鈥檛 keep India waiting long, as they were all out in the first session of the fourth day of the first Test in Chennai on Sunday. They were crushed by India by 280 runs, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the two-test series.
Chasing a mammoth 515, Bangladesh managed 234 in the second innings, with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bagging six wickets after getting no success in the first.聽
After hitting a ton in the first innings while coming to bat after India were 144-6, there was no match for the Player of the Match award to Ashwin.聽
Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto top scored with 82, but the Tigers lost the last six wickets for only 40 runs.聽
With the win, the hosts will be looking to extend their advantage at the top of the World Test Championship table. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have slipped to number six from four with a point percentage of 39.29.聽
There was rain overnight in Chennai, but the two unbeaten batters, Shakib Al Hasan and Shanto, started the day on a positive note.聽
Having resumed the day on 158-4, they held the fort for the first hour, as India got no success in an overcast condition.
Ashwin broke the stubborn stand of 48 runs that lasted for 108 balls as Shakib was caught at short-leg for 25.聽
Shakib, who has been struggling with the bat, failed twice in the match to convert a good start into a big one as he scored 32 and 25 in two innings.聽
Bangladesh batters then seemed not in a mood to spend some time at the crease.聽
Liton was miserable in his 10-ball stay, and that was ended by Jadeja as the Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter was caught at slip.聽
Ashwin then dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz for eight to get his 37th five-wicket haul in Tests, equalling the record of the great late Shan Warne.
Only Muttiah Muralitharan is ahead of them with 67.
Captain Shanto was the next man to go as he went for a wild swing at Jadeja and managed a top edge to be caught by Jasprit Bumrah at short cover. He missed his ton for 18 runs.聽
Ashwin鈥檚 sixth victim was Taskin, and then Jadeja wrapped up the innings by knocking Hasan Mahmud out. There were still 10 minutes to go until the lunch break.聽
Bangladesh have still never beaten India in Tests in 14 attempts, now losing 12 and drawing two.
The visitors arrived in Chennai in a confident mood following a historic victory in Pakistan, but they were no match for the strong Indian team.
There were early signs of hope for the visitors as pace bowler Hasan Mahmud claimed five wickets in the first innings and had reduced India to 34-3 in the first hour of play.
Ashwin and Jadeja鈥檚 199-run partnership for the seventh wicket rescued India from a聽precarious 144-6, and then the bowlers led by Bumrah put them in a commanding position after bowling Bangladesh out for 149 runs in the first innings.聽
India declared their second innings at 287-4 on day three after centuries from Shubman Gill, who hit an unbeaten 119, and the returning Pant, who made 109, flattened the opposition.
The two teams now head to the northern Indian city of Kanpur for the second Test starting on Friday.
