The newly appointed vice-chancellor of Rajshahi Medical University Professor Dr Md Jawadul Haque held a view-exchange with journalists in Rajshahi on Sunday.
Moderated by the RMU registrar Professor Dr Abdus Salam, the university’s planning and development director Sirajum Munir and finance and accounts director Dr Zakir Hossain Khondkar were present at the view-exchange.
The VC paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the War of Independence and the recent student-people uprising, and prayed for the souls of the martyrs.
The VC said, ‘I have the responsibility of all of you to realise the dream that you have seen and shown to the nation of building a country without discrimination and free from corruption and lawlessness by fearless students.’
He mentioned that the objectives of the RMU were mainly to build a 1200-bed specialised hospital to provide healthcare to around 2 crore people in and around Rajshahi district; launching 10 faculties with the aim of creating doctors, nurses and other health-related manpower and increasing their skills; and creating employment and conducting research activities aimed at raising the quality of medical care to international levels.
Pointing out that eight years have already passed but still the initial work of implementing these three goals has not been completed, Jawadul Haque said, ‘In this situation, I have been entrusted with the responsibility of this university. I need the suggestions and cooperation of people from all walks of life in Rajshahi region, especially journalists, so that I can work with utmost transparency, honesty and devotion to achieve these goals.’
He also said that his immediate aim was to build the university’s own campus and buildings, to launch postgraduate courses and to start research programmes. ‘I want to take short term, medium term and long term plans for the development and expansion of the university.’
