After about four months, academic activities at Dhaka University resumed on Sunday.

The usual atmosphere on the campus returned as the students, teachers, and employees flocked into the campus after the classes of all departments and academic years resumed after the student-led mass uprising.

Academic activities in some other public universities were also ongoing while till now the government did not appoint vice-chancellors to many universities.

Following the Eid-ul-Azha and the summer vacation, classes at Dhaka University were closed between June 2 and June 30.

On July 1, students of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University and Rajshahi University began the quota reform protest.

Same time the teachers of the public universities across the country were observing an indefinite work abstention by boycotting classes and examinations demanding cancellation of the Prattay pension scheme terming it as discriminatory.

The authorities announced public university closure on July 17 amid the student protest turning to the mass uprising.

The education ministry reopened all educational institutions under it from August 18.

Classes at Dhaka University, however, remained closed which resumed on Sunday, except the classes of first-year students.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent at Dhaka University reported that according to the announcement by the Deans’ Committee, classes for students of the 2023-24 academic year would begin on September 30.

Prior to the start of the classes, at around 9:30am a one-minute silence was observed in front of the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building in memory of those who were martyred in the mass uprising, said a press release issued by DU authorities.

The university vice-chancellor, professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, chaired the event where he said that during the uprising the students had suffered psychological trauma and conflicts were seen between teachers and students.

Necessary steps would be taken to address these, he added.

Tamim Hasan Rupa, a fourth-year student of the mass communication and journalism department, said, ‘After returning to classes after three and a half months, I was delighted to see my classmates.’

Classes were resumed already at different public universities.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Rajshahi reported that the orientation class for the freshers, who have recently enrolled at the university under the 2023-2024 academic sessions, was held on Sunday.

Earlier, the academic activities including classes and examinations of the other academic sessions resumed at the university on September 11.

The orientation class for the freshers, however, could not be held on September 11 as the admission processes could not be completed then, said RU vice-chancellor professor Saleh Hasan Naqib.

On August 28, classes were started at Comilla University, on August 11 at Jahangirnagar University, on August 12 at Barishal University, on August 18 at Jagannath University, and on August 31 at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.

Some universities are yet to resume classes including Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur.

Following the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 amid the mass uprising many vice-chancellors from among 56 public universities stepped down simultaneously in an unprecedented scenario.

They resigned from their positions amid the allegation of heavy politicisation of the universities, especially in the past 15 years of the Awami League-led regime.

Pro-vice-chancellors, registrars, treasurers, proctors, deans, provosts, syndicate members, wardens and house tutors also resigned in many universities.

Against this backdrop, the interim government started to appoint new vice-chancellors to the public universities.

Till Sunday at least 17 universities got new vice-chancellors.

The government appointed vice-chancellors to DU, NU, RU, JU, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh Open University, BUET, Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University, SUST, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, Jagannath University, Chittagong University, Rabindra University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Islamic Arabic University and Comilla University so far.
