
Bangladesh’s veteran women’s international master Rani Hamid conceded her first defeat of the 45th Chess Olympiad as her team lost to Norway by 3.5-0.5 points in the 10th round of the women’s section in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday.
The 80-year-old Rani, who earlier won all of her six games, lost to Machlik Monika in the 10th round as the Bangladesh women’s team slipped to 63rd from 43rd place following their second successive loss.
With the loss, Bangladesh remained of their previous collection of 11 points from 10 rounds with five wins against one draw and four losses.
The other three Bangladesh women’s campaigners’ WFM Noshin Anjum drew against WIM Dolgova Olga, while WCM Walijah Ahmed and Nusrat Jahan Alo lost to WIM Koskela Niina and WIM Stanford Sheila Barth, respectively.
In the men’s open section, Bangladesh’s 14-year-old promising FIDE master Manon Reja Neer earned a surprising win over GM Gorshtein Ido, though his team lost to Israel by 3-1 points in the penultimate round to slip to 83rd position from 75th.
Bangladesh collected 10 points after 10 rounds with four wins against two draws and four losses.
Bangladesh’s IM Fahad Rahman and FM Tahsin Tajwar Zia lost to GM Rodshtein Maxim and GM Postny Evgeny, respectively, while GM Enamul Hossain Rajib gave a walkover to GM Nabaty Tamir in the 10th round.
In 11th round and final round games, Bangladesh’s men’s team was facing South Korea while their women’s team was facing Belgium on Sunday.
