The government on Sunday removed Mufti Ruhul Amin from his position as khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque due to his absence at duties and his involvement with the clash at the mosque.
According to an order of the ministry of religious affairs, an unpleasant incident occurred when Ruhul Amin returned to the mosque to lead Jumma prayers and tried to deliver a sermon on September 20. A three-member investigation committee was formed over the incident.
The probe body recommended removing Ruhul Amin from his duties, mentioning that the image of the mosque has been tarnished due to the untoward situation created by Ruhul and his loyal students and outsiders.
The committee also suggested appointing a qualified Islamic scholar as Khatib for the sake of conducting Jumma prayers properly, said the ministry order.
Ruhul Amin and around 300 students and outsiders who came with him are responsible for the unpleasant incident on Friday at the national mosque, said the order, citing a probe body report.
‘The mistrust of common Muslims has been created towards Ruhul Amin, and due to the fear of unpleasant incidents if he leads the Jumma prayers in future, the appropriate authorities approved the proposal to remove him from the post of Khatib,’ said the ministry order.
Amid the situation, Ruhul Amin, chief of Gahardanga Madrassah in Gopalganj, was removed from the post of ‘Khatib’ of the national mosque by this order for the sake of conducting Jummah prayer properly.
Ruhul Amin had been in hiding since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5. After a six-week absence, he attended the mosque with his people on Friday for Jummah prayers.
At that time, several people were injured in a clash between the followers of current Imam Waliur Rahman Khan and former Khatib Ruhul Amin before the Jumma prayers on Friday.
