Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs adviser to Supradip Chakma in a meeting with a delegation from the Embassy of the United States to Bangladesh said on Monday that the interim government was formed to build a society free from discrimination.

‘Our main job is to build up confidence among all the people of the country. We are working to build a country on the basis of justice for all,’ he told the five-member delegation led by the US embassy Charge d’Affaires Helen LaFave at his   Secretariat office.

They discussed issues related to bilateral interests and development in the CHT, home to eleven ethnic minority communities, according to a press release of the CHT affairs ministry.

‘We stand in support of the indigenous communities and all Bangladeshis, recognising their rich cultural heritage and invaluable contributions to the nation’s identity,’ the US embassy in Dhaka said in a statement after the meeting.

It said that the ethnic people’s rights must be respected and upheld, ensuring they are free from discrimination, marginalisation and violence.

‘An inclusive and just society defends the voices and rights of its most vulnerable populations,’ the statement said.

The adviser underscored the need for maintaining law and order, good governance, tourism promotion, equal development and enhancing standard of education in the CHT, the ministry’s release mentioned.

The meeting was held at a time when a tense situation was prevailing after series of attacks on the national minorities in Khagrachari and Rangamati on Thursday and Friday.

The sectarian violence triggered by the murder of a Bengali settler in Khagrachari left at least four ethnic minority people killed in the two hill districts.
