
SM Farhad, general secretary of the Dhaka University unit Islami Chhatra Shibir, has come into the spotlight after his political identity was revealed on Sunday night.
He is a student of the 2017-18 session at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research and attached to Kabi Jasimuddin Hall of DU.
On Sunday night, discussion started on social media on Farhad’s previous involvement with Chhatra League after his identity surfaced as a Shibir leader.
According to a list of the Social Welfare and Research Institute Chhatra League unit published in November 2022, signed by then DU Chhatra League president Sanjit Chandra Das and general secretary Saddam Hussain, Farhad was listed as the joint general secretary of the unit.
On Monday, Farhad told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, ‘I had no involvement with any programmes or activities of Chhatra League at Jasimuddin Hall or the Institute of Social Welfare. I neither submitted any resume for a Chhatra League post nor introduced self as a Chhatra League member at any point.’
He further explained that while serving as president of the Jasimuddin Hall Debating Club and secretary of the Social Welfare Department Debating Club, his photos with different political and cultural figures, including members of the Chhatra League, were shared on social media.
He clarified that all such occasions were related to debate and other co-curricular events and had no political implications.
When asked about his name listed as BCL joint general secretary, he said, ‘My name was added without my permission. I have not participated in any BCL programmes or activities.’
In response to a question as to why he did not protest against the Chhatra League posting, he said, ‘At that time, it wasn’t feasible to oppose the Chhatra League on the campus.’
