Former Awami League lawmaker for Rajshahi-4 constituency Enamul Haque took primary treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital after he was reportedly beaten by fellow prisoners in Rajshahi Central Jail on Wednesday.

‘Enamul Haque was taken to the emergency department of the hospital under police escort at about 6:45pm on Wednesday. He might have been beaten inside the prison by a fellow prisoner as he had a small bruise on his head,’ said RMCH emergency department in-charge Sankar K Biswas.

He said that after doctors at the emergency department had provided him with primary treatment, including a bandage on his head, the former lawmaker then returned to the prison under the same police escort.

Both Rajshahi Central Jail senior jail super and jailer, however, could not be reached for their comments despite repeated attempts over the phone.

On Monday, the Rajshahi Senior Judicial Magistrate Court 1 sent Enamul, also the chairman of ENA Group, to jail rejecting his bail plea in a case over attacking student-led protests on August 5.

The Rapid Action Battalion arrested Enamul at Adabar in Dhaka on September 16.

Enamul was elected lawmaker for the Rajshah-4 constituency three times on the AL ticket in general elections in 2009, 2014, and 2018.
