A case was filed on Thursday night over killing a 24-year-old construction worker by beating and pouring hot water on his body allegedly for stealing a battery from a mosque in Gazipur on September 13.

Md Israfil, 24, died while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital at about 12:30pm on Thursday.


Earlier on the day of the incident, victim’s father Nasir Uddin lodged a complaint. The police took it as a case Thursday night.

Confirming the matter, Sreepur Police Station officer-in-charge Md Jainal Abedin said that Israfil died while undergoing treatment after he was tortured by a group on suspicion of theft.

‘Victim’s father Nasir Uddin filed a case on Thursday night against seven people over the incident. The police are working to bring the accused under the law,’ he said.

Prime accused of the case Md Kamrul Hasan Liton is the general secretary of Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Gazipur Union 2 no ward unit.

Other accused are Liton’s associates Babul Mondal, Shafiqul Islam, Md Jalil, Md Yusuf, Md Sohag and Md Sattar. Besides, 10-12 unidentified persons were also accused in the case.

Gazipur Union ward no 2 unit BNP president Nazrul Islam said that he was not aware of Liton’s involvement in the incident.

Local people said that prime accused Liton’s associates went to victim’s house on September 13 asking about stealing battery a Masjid at Bashbari village of Gazipur union in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila.

They took Israfil to the field of a nearby school, where a group led by BNP leader Liton tortured Israfil for about four hours.

Israfil was seriously injured and fell on the ground. Later, hot water was poured on Israfil’s body.

Victim Israfil’s father Nasir Uddin said that they left injured Israfil there after forcefully taking his signature on a white stamp stating that Israfil was not beaten.

He was taken to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors referred him to Mymensingh Medcial College Hospital.

Later, he was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where he died on Thursday evening.
