Uncertainty looms over resumption of the services of three inter-country trains on the Bangladesh-India routes which have remained closed for over two months.

Railway officials apparently have no information in this regard.

Amid the countrywide student-led mass uprising, rail communications across the country halted on the July 18 afternoon. After partial resumption on August 1 rail communications halted again on August 4, and then finally resumed fully on August 15 inside the country.

But the services of inter-country trains had not resumed as of Thursday.

Railways ministry secretary Abdul Baki told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on September 23 that since July 19 no passenger trains were running between Bangladesh and India.

No trains were going to India from Bangladesh and no trains from India are coming to Bangladesh, he further said.

A letter was given from the railways ministry through the foreign ministry to the Indian authorities over a month ago to resume rail communications between the two countries, he mentioned.

‘We are waiting for their response,’ the secretary said, adding that the freight trains between the two countries were running now.

Three passenger trains run between Bangladesh and India—Maitree Express on the Dhaka-Kolkata, Bandhan Express on Khulna-Kolkata and Mitali Express on Dhaka-Siliguri routes.

Bangladesh Railway deputy director (interchange) Md Mihrabur Rashid Khan said that the services of the freight trains between the two countries resumed on August 20.

The number of trains under the freight services was very low for around one year following the dollar crisis, he said, adding that the number of freight trains on the cross-brother routes depended on demand.

Earlier, during the Covid-19 pandemic the cross-border train services between Bangladesh and India were suspended for over two years to resume in May 2022.

The Maitree Express was launched in 2008, the Bandhan Express in 2017 and the Mitali Express in 2021.
