
Islamist political parties and organisations demonstrated on Friday in Dhaka and elsewhere in Bangladesh protesting at the derogatory remarks made on the Prophet Muhammad (SM) by Indian priest Ramgiri Maharaj and the support the remark received from Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nitesh Narayan Rane, who is also a member of the Maharashtra Assembly.
The protesters came out of the mosques after the Friday prayers, held protest rallies in front of mosques and brought out processions on different streets, including those in the capital Dhaka, demanding exemplary punishment for the priest and the BJP leader.
Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan and Boishammya-Birodhi Qawmi Chattra Oikya Parishad held rallies in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. They also brought out processions from the place demanding punishment for Ramgiri Maharaj and Nitesh Narayan Rane.
Boishammya-Birodhi Qawmi Chattra Oikya Parishad’s Chattogram district representative Ziauddin Faruki said that Muslims would not tolerate offensive remarks on the Prophet.
He demanded immediate arrest of the accused and said that Muslims would announce tough programmes if exemplary punishment was not ensured for the offenders.
World Sunni Movement also held a rally in front of the Press Club protesting against the derogatory remarks.
Similar rallies and processions, using public announcement systems, were organised in many places in Dhaka.
They announced ‘zero tolerance’ against any kind of attacks on Islam and its prophet.
In Rajshahi, Muhammadia Juba Sunni, Rajshahi, and several hundred protesters under the banner of ‘General Students, Rajshahi’ brought out processions from the city’s Boro Mosjid of Ziro Point area.
Protesters at the rallies warned the Indian government of boycotting Indian products in Bangladesh if visible measures would not be taken.
In Munshiganj, the district unit of Imam Akkidah Sangrakhan Committee also held demonstrations demanding exemplary punishment for the Indian priest and the MLA, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Munshiganj.
Protesters brought out a procession from the Munshiganj Central Shaheed Minar at around 3:00pm.
The procession ended in a rally at the district town’s Super Market area after marching different roads in the town.
Khatme Nabuwat Andolon Bangladesh Amir Mufti Nur Hussain Nurani presided over the demonstration that also demanded exemplary punishment for the accused and urged the people of Bangladesh to boycott Indian products.
