Students and people on Saturday threw their shoes at ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina鈥檚 portrait near the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus.
A group of DU students under the banner of 鈥楽tudents against fascism, Dhaka University鈥� organised a mass shoe-throwing event to mark the birthday of Hasina.
Students chanted various slogans, including 鈥榃e demand justice for killer Hasina.鈥�
The organisers were heard saying, 鈥楾hrow shoes at the dictator, and win Coke and Mojo.鈥�
Participants in the shoe-throwing event were given soft drinks after throwing their shoes.
Seeking anonymity, a female participant in the event said, 鈥楴o matter which government comes, this is a message. The country should be run properly. If not, we will force you to resign and, if necessary, we will beat you with shoes.鈥�
Another participant said, 鈥楽he [Hasina] is a murderer. She has shed the blood of many of our brothers. She has killed many people, and that鈥檚 why I am throwing shoes.鈥�
Student protests that started on July 1 flared into a mass uprising towards the end of the month, overthrowing the Awami League government and forcing Hasina to resign and flee to India on August 5.
