Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday called for unity, saying that unity should be the tool for building the nation.

‘Let us try to build a united society. No division, unity might be the tool for nation building,’ he said, addressing a meeting of his party leaders as chief guest in Chuadanga, organised by the district Jamaat, said a press release.


‘On the basis of consensus, we’ve entrusted the task of building the country to the interim government,’ he said, adding, ‘If they do something good, the country people will get the benefit, I will get the benefit, you will get the benefit.’

‘If they [interim government] make a mistake, we will help them know and correct them,’ he said.

‘Some issues have come to our attention, we have advised [the government], and received positive results,’ the Jamaat amir continued.

‘We should pray for them as human beings so that they don’t do anything beyond the conscience and the expectations of the nation,’ he added.

He mentioning that India was an independent country and similarly Bangladesh was also an independent country.

‘Apart from India, we have other neighbouring countries. Moreover, there are many other countries in this world. We say the same to everyone. All the countries of the world, including Bangladesh, want to move forward together and on the basis of mutual dignity and equality,’ Shafiqur Rahman said.

With district amir Ruhul Amin in chair, district secretary Assaduzzaman conducted the meeting. Central executive council member and Jashore-Kustia region director Mubarak Hossain and Meherpur district Jamaat amir Maulana Tajuddin spoke as special guests.

‘The fascist government has been ousted through the student-people uprising and now we’ve got the opportunity to work in a free environment. This opportunity should be fully utilised,’ Mubarak Hossain said.

Laying emphasis on hard work to put their party into a strong base, he said that Jamaat-e-Islami should be made a people’s organisation through people-based advocacy work.

Kushtia district Jamaat amir professor Abul Hashem, Chuadanga district naib-e-amir Azizur Rahman, assistant secretary Masood Parvez Russell, Abdul Quader, former amir of the district Jamaat Anwarul Haque Manik, naib-e-amir of Meherpur Mahbub Alam, and district secretary of Iqbal Hussain, among others, were present.
