At least 65 more readymade garment factories suspended operation on Sunday in Savar, Ashulia and Zirani area while garment workers in Gazipur blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for about four hours to press home their demands.

Of the 65 factories, over a dozen were closed in line with the ‘no work no pay’ provision of the Section 13(1) of the labour act, according to industry sources.

They said that the rest 51 factories announced holiday as their workers either did not work or left factories after joining in the morning.

Workers in the Ashulia and Gazipur industrial belts have been protesting since August 29 over demands of increasing different allowances, timely wage payment, payment of arrears, and wage hike.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Gazipur reported that the workers of R&G (BD) Garment Co blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Bhabanipur area from about 2:15pm to 6:00pm, pressing their 12-point demand, including attendance allowance, night bill, tiffin bill and the removal of an employee.

Local people and workers alleged that human resource management and admin department manager Hasan was harassing, torturing and sacking workers.

Members of the police and Industrial Police tried to clear the road but failed.

The protest triggered massive traffic congestions as both ways of the highway were blocked for hours.

Superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police Md Sarwar Alam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they heard human resource manager Hasan resigned.

‘Workers protested on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway till the evening. We are trying to resolve the matter discussing with owners and workers,’ the police super added.

Garment factory owners agreed on September 24 to all the 18 demands of the protesting workers, including increase in attendance, tiffin and night shift allowances, in an effort to restore normalcy in the units, particularly in the Ashulia area, where protests had been ongoing since August 29.
