The Khaiyachara waterfall at Mirsarai upazila in Chattogram has been temporarily closed following the death of a bank official due to falling rocks.
The Forest Department announced the closure on Saturday evening, citing the need for the renovation work.
SM Kaisher, deputy conservator of forests and the divisional forest officer of the Chattogram North Forest Division, confirmed that only the Khaiyachara waterfall was affected by the closure while the other waterfalls within Baraiadhala National Park remained open to the public.
The Forest Department has urged tourists to ensure that they are accompanied by a forest department employee or a certified guide when visiting the waterfall.
SM Kaisher also said, ‘Due to ongoing bad weather and the renovation work, the Khaiyachara waterfall has been temporarily closed.’
Earlier, a bank official died after being struck by a falling rock at the site, the official said, adding that unstable rocks are being removed, and the work, which has been started today, may take two to four days to complete.
‘The Khaiyachara waterfall remains closed, but the other waterfalls are open. We request visitors to travel with our staff members or licensed guides for their safety,’ he said.
On September 27, six officials from One Bank’s Karwan Bazar head office visited the Khaiyachara waterfall and while bathing near the waterfall, stones suddenly fell from above, killing Mahbub Hasan on the spot.
Another official, Gazi Ahmed bin Shams, seriously injured in the incident, is undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
