Jagannath University will celebrate its 19th anniversary on October 20 with a focus on the ‘July Revolution’ that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5.
In honour of the students who were injured or martyred during the revolution, the university has decided not to hold any concerts this year, according to vice-chancellor Professor Rezaul Karim.
In a preparatory meeting on Monday, the VC shared that, instead of a concert, the university would hold a memorial service and prayer for the souls of the martyrs and for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Deans from different faculties and department heads expressed their support for not holding a concert this year. However, traditional activities such as a rally, plays, and video documentaries reflecting the revolution's impact will take place.
In addition, the university will welcome new students of the 2023-2024 academic year at an orientation programme on that day.
Following the announcement, students’ opinions were divided with some supporting the concert cancellation and others opposing it.
Vice-chancellor Rezaul Karim said, ‘Our hearts are still bleeding. We may never regain what we lost in the July Revolution, and it’s difficult to celebrate while those injured are still hospitalised.’
He further noted, ‘We will eventually celebrate at a favourable time. For now, we are considering organising convocation soon, where we can all come together in joy.’
