Today is the 118th anniversary of the birth of legendary singer and music director Sachin Dev Burman.
Born in 1906 in Cumilla, SD Burman admitted to the Victoria College, Cumilla from where he passed his IA in 1922 and then BA in 1924. He then left to study MA in Calcutta University. But, he did not complete it.
He took his formal education in music under musician KC Dey. He later learnt music under Bhismadev Chattopadhaya, Ustad Badal Khan and Ustad Allauddin Khan.
He started his carrier through Bengali films in 1937. He moved to Mumbai on the request of Sashadhar Mukharjee in 1940.
Prominent singers of the Indian subcontinent like Lata Mangeskhar, Mohammad Rafi, Geeta Dutta, Manna Dey, Asha Bosle, Mukesh and Talat Mahmud have lent their voices to playbacks composed by Sachin Dev.
He composed playbacks for evergreen Indian films like 鈥楳atir Ghar鈥�, 鈥楽hikari鈥�, 鈥楧il Ki Rani鈥�, 鈥楳iss India鈥�, 鈥楾ere Ghar Ke Samne鈥�, 鈥楰aise Kahoon鈥�, 鈥楯oyoti鈥� and 鈥楶rem Pujari鈥�.
He received Filmfare Best Music Director Award, Sangeet Natok Academy Award, Asia Film Society Award and Padma Shri Award.
Sachin Dev Burman passed away on October 31, 1975.
