Rights organisation Maayer Daak co-founder Sanjida Islam Tulee on Monday alleged that army personnel picked up her elder brother Saiful Islam Shamol from their home in the capital’s Shaheenbag area.

She said that an army man returned his brother to them after about two and a half hours.

Maayer Daak is a platform of the family members of the victims of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.

Sanjida said that 15 or 16 army personnel in uniforms raided their house and picked up her elder brother at about 2:30pm.

‘Army personnel raided our house for more than one and a half hours,’ said Sanjida, while talking to reporters at her home Monday evening.

She said that the army personnel told them that they came to the house after receiving allegations of extortion in the area and possessing illegal arms and drugs against her family members.

‘My brother is attending most of the programmes with me in recent days. I think that my brother was targeted for this reason,’ she said.

She said that an army official returned her brother to them after 5:00pm.

The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate in a statement on Monday evening said that they took Saiful Islam Shamol to the nearby army camp for interrogation as they received an allegation that the man was involved in extortion in the area.

It said that Saiful was accused in a case for possessing illegal arms and he was in jail in the case.
