Two magistrate courts in Dhaka on Tuesday placed former Awami League lawmakers Abdullah Al Islam Jakob and Mahbub Ara Begun Gini and former Public Security Division senior secretary Md Jahangir Alam on remand for different periods in three cases.

Another metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on the day allowed a police plea seeking the court鈥檚 permission to show former Textile and Jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi arrested in one more murder case.


Meanwhile, a press release issued by Rapid Action Battalion Tuesday evening said that they had arrested former Awami League lawmaker for Khulna-4 constituency, Abdus Salam Murshedy, at a location in the Bashundhara Residential Area in Dhaka.

It said that the former lawmaker was arrested in a case of murder lodged with Phultala police station in Khulna in 2022.

Murshedy is also a former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

Officials said that Dhaka senior judicial magistrate Rabeya Sultana, responding to a plea submitted by the police, allowed the police to take Jakob, a former deputy minister for environment and forest affairs, under their custody for five days for interrogation in the case lodged over alleged attempt to kill former Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmaker Nazim Uddin Alam in Savar in 2012.

Earlier in the day, Dhaka Metropolitan Police鈥檚 Detective Branch arrested Jakob at a location in the capital鈥簊 Gulshan area.

The same court, responding to a police petition, also placed former AL lawmaker for Gaibandha-2, Mahbub Ara Begum Gini, on a three-day remand in a case filed over the attempt to murder college student Rabius Sunny Shipu in Ashulia during the recent student-mass movement.

Gini was arrested at the capital鈥檚 Dhanmondi early Tuesday.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Belal Hossain, responding to a police plea seeking a 10-day remand, placed former home ministry鈥檚 Public Security Division senior secretary Md Jahangir Alam on a five-day remand in connection with a case of killing a teenage boy, Abdul Motalib, during the recent movement on August 4 in the capital鈥檚 Dhanmondi area.

He was arrested at Gulshan Tuesday morning.

Another BSS report said that Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Saiful Islam on Tuesday allowed a police petition seeking the court鈥檚 permission to show former textile and jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi arrested in a case lodged over the killing of Hasan Mahmud, president of Dhaka South city unit of Jatiyatabadi Sarak Paribahan Shramik Dal, who was also a journalist.

Hasan Mahmud鈥簊 widow Fatema filed the case on August 29 against 35 including Hasina, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan.

On the other hand, Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge Mohammad Ash Shams Zaglul Hossain, allowing separate pleas filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, imposed travel ban on Bogura-2 former lawmaker Shariful Islam Jinnah and former cabinet secretary Kabir Bin Anwar in connection with corruption allegations against them.
