
Politicians, academics and national minority leaders on Friday at a roundtable in Dhaka called on the interim government to withdraw army deployed in some parts of Chattogram Hill Tracts.
For the democratic transition of the country and ensuring democratic rights of the CHT people, it is crucial to withdraw of army from the area, they said at the roundtable organised by the United Peoples Democratic Front at the National Press Club on the latest situations in the CHT.
Economist and former professor of Jahangirnagar University Anu Muhammad demanded the formation of a mass enquiry commission for fining cause of the death of four people in the hill recently.
‘Moreover, the army should be withdrawn from the hill for establishing peace and stability,’ he added.
The Revolutionary Communist League central leader Harun Ur Rashid, lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua, Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq, Jatiya Mukti Council secretary Faiezul Hakim, Democratic Revolutionary Party general secretary Mushrefa Mishu, Socialist Party of Bangladesh coordinator Masud Rana, human right activist Shapon Adnan, among others, spoke at the discussion.
The UPDF leader Michael Chakma read out seven-point demands and called on the interim government to implement the demands.
The demands included, withdrawal of army from the CHT, resolving issue of land ownerships in the hill and giving the national minority people constitutional recognition.
