A youth was allegedly stabbed to death by muggers on the Azampur footbridge in the capital’s Uttara area on Sunday morning.
The victim is Mohammad Sohan, 27, a driver at a private company in Pabna.
The muggers stabbed Sohan and took away his mobile phone and moneybag at about 5:00am when he was crossing the road using the Azampur footbridge, according to witnesses and the family.
Rickshaw puller Mohammad Rakib and other pedestrians recovered him in a critical condition and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctor on duty declared him dead, they said.
DMCH police outpost in-charge Mohammad Faruk said that the body was kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
‘We have informed the police of the incident,’ he added.
Uttara East police station officer-in-charge Md Mahibbullah said that they were yet to confirm whether he was attacked by muggers.
‘The process of filing a case in this regard is underway,’ the OC said, adding that the victim was first taken to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital and later shifted to the DMCH.
‘I spoke with the rickshaw puller and other witnesses but could not confirm whether it was an attack by muggers,’ the OC said.
The victim’s brother, Mohammad Shaon, said that he came to know over the phone that his brother was stabbed by muggers and admitted to the DMCH.
‘My brother came to Dhaka. The muggers halted him on the Azampur footbridge and stabbed him. They fled the scene scene taking away his mobile phone and moneybag. Pedestrians informed me that he was taken to the Dhaka Medical,’ Shaon said.
He said that his brother was a resident of Pabna Sadar upazila.
