A group of Jagannath University students at a press conference on Tuesday announced that they would begin a campaign today, opposing the installation of a mural of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia on the campus.
They also brought out a procession on the campus at 9:00pm, demanding the university administration to revoke the decision over the installation of the mural by Tuesday.
The JnU students said that if the university authorities installed an 11-foot mural of Khaleda, they would submit a formal complaint to the education adviser on Sunday.
They also warned that they would take more stringent measures if their demands were not met.
In a written statement, botany department student AKM Rakib, said that they had recently learned that the JnU administration had decided to install a mural of former prime minister Khaleda Zia on October 20, marking the Jagannath University Day.
In a statement, the JnU public relations office, however, clarified that the installation would not be a mural but a plaque featuring Khaleda’s image.
The JnU proctor Tazammol Haque said that there would only be a small plaque in front of the administrative building, and it would not be a statue.
Regarding the mural, JnU student affairs committee from the Islamic studies department coordinator Roich Uddin stated, ‘I am personally against the culture of murals. This is not a mural, but simply a plaque featuring an image.’
English department students Farhad Hossain and Sifat Hasan Sakib, and public administration department student Sorna Akter Ria, among others, were present at the press conference at the JnU Shaheed Minar.
