
A youth was lynched by an angry mob after he had reportedly stabbed two people, including an imam of a local mosque, at Chapainawabganj Sadar on Thursday.
The deceased is Mizanur Rahman, 30, a resident of Simultala village.
He was involved in dealing drugs, said police.
Quoting locals, Chapainawabganj Sadar model police station officer-in-charge SM Zakaria told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Mizanur was angry with Shimultala Baluchar Mosque imam Md Hossain as the latter had been encouraging villagers to speak out against drugs for a long time.
‘Enraged by this, Mizanur stabbed Hossain while the latter was getting off a boat in the river at about 8:30am on Thursday,’ he said, adding that Mizanur also stabbed another person named Harun who went to rescue Hossain.
Following the incident, local people caught Mizanur and severely beat him, leaving him critically injured.
The police official said that on information, they rushed Hossain, Harun, and Mizanur to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital where doctors on duty declared Mizanur dead, and referred Hossain to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The process of taking legal action in this regard is underway, he added.
According to the monthly report of human rights organistation Ain O Salish Kendra, at least 49 people were lynched in the past two months.
The report, which is yet to be published, stated that 28 people were lynched in September and 21 others were lynched in August this year. In the same two months in the past year, 10 people were lynched across the country.
