The police have arrested six people on charges of cheating and looting money and seized Taka 57.50 lakh in Mirpur, Dhaka.

The arrestees were identified as Md Mohsin Munshi, Md Mazaharul Islam, Md Rezaul Karim, Taiyab, Md Humayun Kabir and Noor Mohammad alias Natu.


Mohammad Maksedur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Mirpur Division under Dhaka Metropolitan Police, briefed journalists at DMP Media Centre about the incident.

He said the police also recovered a pistol-like gas lighter, six mobile phone sets and an iron almirah along with Taka 57.50 lakh from their possessions.

Rahman said Md Harunur Rashid Bhuya (60), a resident of Dhanmondi, purchased 2nd, 3rd and 8th floors of a 10-storey under-construction building at Dhanmondi Road 4/A from Nafco Developer Company Limited at Taka 3.75 crore with a deed of Taka 30 lakh as ‘baina’ advanced. Later, the buyer paid Taka 1.23 lakh on different dates at times.

He said deputy managing director Faisal Sheikh and managing director of Nafco Developer Company called the buyer on mobile phone to come to house no-9/2, Block-B, Section-06, Road No-05 under Mirpur police station on October 8. They (developers) also told the victim to bring money for the registration of those flats.

He also said that following the request of MD and DMD of the company, on October 8 at 6:10pm, the victim along with his family members went to Nafco Developer Company office with Taka 72.80 lakh in two bags.

At that time, an unidentified person took the victim to 6th floor with Taka 32.80, while victim’s wife kept the remaining Taka 40 lakh in another bag in their car parked at the parking zone of the office, he added.

Later, DMD Faisal Sheikh along with unknown 20/25 persons wearing masks threatened the victim to shoot with a pistol-like object and beat him. They also took Taka 32.80 and locked them in a room, the DC added.

He said the unidentified persons also beat the victim’s wife, son, daughter and driver who were in the parking lot and took another Taka 40 lakh, gold chain (one Bhori) and five mobile phone sets from them.

They also locked them in a room, next to DMD Faisal Sheikh’s office, from outside. The victim’s family members came out of the room when an unknown person opened the door hearing screams, he added.

Mirpur police went to the spot and rescued the victims after getting information as surrounding people rushed to the spot after hearing their screams.

Later, Pallabi Police Station conducted raids on the area and arrested criminals. Police also recovered Taka 57.50 and other evidence from them.

On interrogation, the arrested persons told police that Faisal Sheikh was involved in the incident. They also committed such fraud and embezzled money several times.

The police have been conducting operations to arrest others involved in the incident.

A case was filed in Mirpur Model Police Station on October 9 in this regard.
