A case was filed over the attack on Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia鈥檚 motorcade at Chhagalnaiya in Feni in 2017.

Sultan Mohammad Sikandar Bhutto, former finance secretary of Chhagalnaiya upazila unit of BNP, filed the case with the Chhagalnaiya police station on Thursday night, said Md Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station.


A total of 251 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate organisations, including the former lawmaker of Feni 1 constituency and former protocol officer of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Alauddin Ahmed聽 Chowdhury Nasim, were made accused in the case.

An additional 150-200 unidentified people were also accused in the case.

According to the case statement, on October 28, 2017, during Khaleda Zia鈥檚 trip to Cox鈥檚 Bazar to visit Rohingya refugee camps and distribute relief, her motorcade was attacked by AL activists at Muhuriganj on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.

At that time, AL leaders and activists stopped Khaleda Zia鈥檚 convoy in Muhuriganj area, according to the statement.

They attacked the convoy with locally made weapons and exploded crude bombs, and the attackers vandalised 25-30 vehicles while two motorcycles were also set on fire, said the statement.

Apart from this, the AL tried to kill leaders and activists of the BNP, and the party secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was injured in that attack, it said, adding that the attack caused damage worth about Tk 1.8 crore.

Later, when the motorcade left the scene, AL leaders and activists attacked and vandalised the houses of local BNP leaders and activists, added the case statement.

Other notable accused included Jalal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury Pappu, member of the Awami League鈥檚 central relief and social welfare subcommittee, Khaerul Bashar Majumdar Tapan, former chairman of Feni District Council, Mezbabul Haider Chowdhury Sohel, former chairman of Chhagalnaiya Upazila Parishad, Abdul Alim Majumdar, former chairman of Phulgazi Upazila Parishad, Harun Majumdar, former chairman of Phulgazi Upazila Parishad, Kamal Uddin Majumdar, former chairman of Parshuram Upazila Parishad, Nizam Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury Sajel, former mayor of Parshuram Municipality; and Mohammad Mostafa, former mayor of the Chhagalnaiya municipality.

Sikandar Bhutto explained that it was not possible to file the case under the previous government, but with the restoration of democratic conditions in the country, he is now able to proceed with legal action.
