Obaidul Huq

Today is the 17th anniversary of the death of writer and journalist Obaidul Huq, said a press release.

Born on October 31, 1911 in Feni, Obaidul Huq earned his master鈥檚 in Philosophy from Dhaka University and LLB from Calcutta University.


He was the first Bengali Muslim to make a feature film titled Dukkhhe Jader Jiban Gora in 1946.

After the partition of India, he returned to the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) from Calcutta, and joined the editorial board of the Pakistan Observer (later The Bangladesh Observer) in 1951 as joint editor. He also served as editor the daily.

After leaving The Bangladesh Observer, he edited the now defunct the Daily News.

He was the chairman of Press Institute of Bangladesh and chairman of Dainik Bangla and Bangladesh Times trustee boards. He was also chairman of Nazrul Institute.

Obaidul Huq was honored with a number of national and international awards, including the Ekushey Padak, Bangla Academy Award and the UNICEF Gold Medal.

Obaidul Huq died on October 13 in 2007 in Dhaka.
