
The government has reconstituted the International Crimes Tribunal with the appointment of Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder of the High Court as its chairman, according to a gazette notification issued by the law ministry on Monday.
Justice Md Shofiul Alam Mahmood, a High Court judge, and retired district and sessions judge Md Mohitul Haq Anam Chowdhury were appointed members of the tribunal.
Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, who served as a district and sessions judge, and Md Shofiul Alam Mahmood, a Supreme Court lawyer, were appointed additional High Court judges on October 9.
Md Mohitul Haq Anam Chowdhury retired in 2023 as a judge at the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Sylhet.
The appointments were made in consultation with the Supreme Court, said interim government law adviser Asif Nazrul, who expressed hope that the tribunal would resume operations soon.
On September 5, the law ministry appointed Mohammad Tajul Islam, known for defending Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leaders in war crimes cases during the Awami League government, the chief prosecutor of the tribunal. Other new prosecutors include Md Mizanul Islam, Gazi Monawar Hussain Tamim, BM Sultan Mahmud, and Abdullah Al Noman.
Mizanul Islam, who had defended top Jamaat leaders in ICT cases, later resigned.
On September 18, the home ministry reconstituted the ICT鈥檚 Investigation Agency, appointing 10 members, including two former police officials, to investigate the allegation of crimes against humanity during the mass uprising.
The newly appointed members include retired additional deputy inspector general Md Mazharul Haque, retired superintendent of police Muhammad Shahidullah Chowdhury, additional superintendent of police Md Alamgir and several other police inspectors from various units. Retired superintendent of police Muhammad Shahidullah Chowdhury has been appointed as the chief coordinator of the ICT Investigation Agency.
