The average pass rate in combined results of this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations declined slightly comparing with the past year.
Holding exams on the major subjects properly contributed to the ‘usual’ results of the examinations, said the education ministry officials.
The results of some other subjects, which were cancelled due to student-mass uprising, were determined through subject mapping.
They also said that the number of examinees securing a Grade Point Average of 5 in the examinations across Bangladesh, however, increased significantly due to the method.
This year the combined pass rate in the HSC and equivalent examinations has stood at 77.78 per cent which was 78.64 per cent in 2023 results.
A total of 1,45,911 students have obtained GPA 5 this year which was 92,595 last year.
The number of educational institutions with no passes increased to 65 this year from 42 in 2023 while the number of educational institutions with a 100 per cent passes also increased to 1,388 from 953 in 2023.
Among the nine general boards, one madrassah, and one technical board, the highest pass rate was 93.4 per cent in the madrassah board this year, and the lowest was 63.22 per cent in the Mymensingh board.
Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee chair and Dhaka Education Board chairman professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar officially published the results on Tuesday from his Dhaka board office.
This year the HSC and equivalent exams started on June 30 and, after holding examinations on seven subjects, the interim government on August 20 cancelled the remaining six examinations in the face of the student protest.
The results of the exams were published using subject mapping method on the cancelled subjects based on the students’ results of the Secondary School Certificate and equivalent exams and through usual evaluation of answer papers of the seven exams.
At a press briefing, professor Tapan said that there was an expectation for increased pass rate this year due to subject mapping.
‘In HSC level the pass rate usually depends on the English and ICT subjects,’ he said, adding, ‘as exams were held on these subjects, the results were usual like other years.’
This year’s pass rate in English subject is 86.16 per cent in Dhaka, 83.98 per cent in Rajshahi, 79.93 per cent in Cumilla, 68.76 per cent in Jashore, 69 per cent in Chattogram, 83.36 per cent in Barishal, 100 per cent in Sylhet, 83.46 per cent in Dinajpur and 77.11 per cent in Mymensingh boards.

About the results of the students who changed groups, the chairman explained that they had converted the numbers of the elective subjects taken during the SSC and equivalent exams in the subject mapping process.
He also said that subject mapping method increased the number of GPA 5 this year as the students - who changed groups - got the benefits.
In the certificates, there would be no mention for subject mapping which would not affect the students’ intention to study abroad, he said.
For subject mapping, there was a consultant committee who had prepared a set of guidelines which was followed this time, he added.Â
Some students and teachers from Dhaka College and Dhaka City College said that the results based on subject mapping method would affect their future academic life and university admission tests as the results were not a complete assessment of their hard works.
Some of them, however, said that they were happy with their results.
As per the results published on Tuesday, no examinees passed from 65 educational institutions, with the highest 20 institutions in Dinajpur board, 12 in Rajshahi, eight in Dhaka, sven in Jashore, five in Chattogram, four each in Cumilla and Mymensingh, three in technical and two in madrassah boards.
Professor Tapan said that most of these institutions are madrassahs and not under Monthly Payment Order system.
