Mixed reactions came from the students and teachers over the use of subject mapping method for publishing the results of this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations on Tuesday.

Many of the students and teachers said that the results would affect their future academic life as the results were not a complete assessment to their hard works.

They also said that the results would also affect their university admission tests by increasing the competition.

Many of them, however, said that they were happy with their results.

The HSC and equivalent exams started on June 30 and after holding examinations on seven subjects the authorities suspended the exams from July 18 during the student-led mass uprising.

After the fall of the Hasina government, in the face of the protest by examinees, the interim government on August 20 cancelled the remaining six examinations.

The results of the exams have been published using subject mapping method on the cancelled subjects based on the results of SSC and equivalent exams and evaluation of answer papers of the seven held exams.

Md Shamim Reza, who obtained GPA-5 from the science group in Dhaka College, said, ‘Due to subject mapping method the number of GPA-5 achievers increased significantly this year which may create huge competitions in university admission tests and many students may not get admission in their expected universities,’ he said.

Ahnaf Habib, a GPA-5 achiever from science group in Dhaka City College, said, ‘There should not be any alternative to examinations. It would be better for our future if we could sit for all the examinations to evaluate ourselves properly.’

Dhaka College principal Professor AKM Ilias said that he would be happier if the students got their results after sitting for all examinations.

‘This result is a partial assessment,’ he added.

Ridwan Morol, science group student of Dhaka City College, said that students went through a difficult situation due to the violent student-led mass uprising and devastating flood.

‘We were not in a state to sit for the remaining examinations,’ he added.

Dhaka City College principal Kazi Neamul Hoq mentioned the subject mapping method results as a need for an unavoidable situation.

This year, the combined pass rate in the HSC and equivalent examinations has stood at 77.78 per cent and a total of 1,45,911 students have obtained GPA 5.

In 2023, the combined pass rate was 78.64 per cent while 92,595 students obtained GPA 5.
