
The government has initiated sale of essential goods at affordable prices for readymade garment workers through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh.
Labour and employment adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain launched the programme on Wednesday during an event at a factory in Gazipur, according to a press release.
Asif said, ‘We have begun distributing essential goods at fair prices for RMG workers today, with plans to gradually expand the programme nationwide.’
He also said that the government made a plan to initiate a pension scheme for RMG workers
‘I want to introduce a pension scheme for readymade garment workers the under Social Safety Programme to ensure their financial security after retiring,’ he said.
Commerce secretary Md Selim Uddin and labour and employment secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman attended the event as special guests.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association president Khandoker Rafiqul Islam presided over the event.
‘When RMG workers are struggling with high inflation, this initiative will ease their burden and contribute to the welfare of the industrial sector,’ Rafiqul said.
