
A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Friday sent Trinamool BNP chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury to jail in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over the murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim on October 28, 2023 during the Bangladesh Nationalist Party grand rally at Naya Paltan in the capital.
The same court on the day also allowed the police to take Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Diplomatic Security Division additional deputy commissioner Jewel Rana in police custody for four days in a case filed over shooting domestic worker Liza Akther to death during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 18.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Begum Afnan Somi passed the orders as police produced them before the court.
The police said that the DMP’s detective branch arrested three additional superintendents of police – Jewel Rana, Shahen Shah and Md Rafiqul Islam –Thursday evening following approval from the home ministry.
DB joint commissioner Rabiul Islam said that they took permission from the home ministry as serving officials could not be arrested without permission from the ministry.
He said that they were yet to arrest additional superintendent of police, Hasan Arafat.
‘We have produced Shahen Shah before the court and he is now in custody. We will seek remand for him on October 21,’ said Rabiul, adding that Rafiqul was produced before the court by the Gulshan police. Â
Officials said that the police arrested Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury at his Banani home in Dhaka on Thursday.
According to the case documents, the BNP organised a grand rally on October 28, 2023. To foil the programme, the Awami League also called a grand rally in the capital. At one stage, Awami League activists, with the help of police, attacked the BNP's rally at Naya Paltan, killing Shamim on the spot.
The case was filed with the Paltan police station on September 24, 2024.
The police, after getting permission from the home ministry, arrested serving police official Jewel Rana.
Liza, who used to work as a domestic help in the Ramna area, was shot by police on July 18 as the police opened fire on the agitating students and people in the area.
The domestic help succumbed to her injuries on July 22.
On September 5, Liza's father Md Joynal Shikder filed the case against 174 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The metropolitan magistrate, Begum Afnan Somi, on Friday also sent Tanti League’s Sutrapur thana unit president Md Abu Sayeed to jail in a case of killing a student, Nadimul Hasan Elem, during the anti-discrimination student movement, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported.
Police arrested Md Abu Sayeed at a location under Sutrapur Police Station Thursday evening.
