The High Court in Bangladesh on Monday granted pre-arrest bail to prominent human rights defender ZI Khan Panna in an attempted murder case.
A bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain granted the bail after a brief hearing on the outspoken lawyer’s petition.
His bail will remain in effect until the investigation report is submitted, Panna’s junior, Shahinuzzaman Shahin, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
ZI Khan Panna, who also serves as a trustee board member of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), was among 180 people named in the case.
The case, filed on October 17, accuses Panna, who is also the chair of rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra, of involvement in an attack that allegedly injured a youth during studen-led mass uprising on July 19.
Md Baker, the father of the alleged victim Ahadul Islam, lodged the complaint with Khilgaon police station, Khilgaon officer-in-charge Md Daud Hossain confirmed on Sunday.
Various rights groups and legal professionals, including BLAST, have condemned the case, calling it ‘baseless’ and demanding Panna’s name be withdrawn.
Senior lawyers Shahdeen Malik, Ahsanul Karim, and Mohammad Hossain, along with several of Panna’s juniors, represented him during the bail hearing.
