Students of Jahangirnagar University brought out a torch procession on the campus on Monday night demanding the resignation of Bangladesh president Mohammed Shahabuddin.
They made the demand over the president allegedly making a self-contradictory comment regarding Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as the prime minister amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5.
The students brought out the procession from the university’s central Shaheed Minar premises and marched towards the Dhaka-Aricha Highway.
Meanwhile, they chanted slogans terming the president as an agent of Awami League and Sheikh Hasina.
Later, they held a rally on the Shaheed Minar premises at about 9:00pm.
‘The incumbent president was an associate of the fascist Awami League government. He is still trying to bring Hasina to power, flouting the sacrifices of thousands of students and others,’ a protesting student Mustafizur Rahman said.
They warned of waging a tougher movement if the president did not resign post soon.
In a recent interview with Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, chief editor of The Daily Manab Zamin, the president mentioned that he heard Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position as prime minister, however, he has no documentary evidence to confirm this, including any resignation letter.
He stated, ‘I have failed to obtain the resignation letter despite numerous attempts. Perhaps she did not get the time.’
This conversation was published in the newspaper’s political magazine, ‘Janatar Chokh,’ on Sunday.
Sheikh Hasina sought refuge in India on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.
