The Sundarbans and its adjacent south-west Bangladesh might be affected by the potential cyclonic storm Dana, warned Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Tuesday.

The low pressure that emerged over the east-central Bay of Bengal strengthened into a deep depression on Tuesday afternoon amidst forecasts of it turning into a cyclonic storm today, the BMD said.

‘The right side of the storm is likely to pass over the Sundarbans and south-west Khulna division,’ meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

Under the influence of the potential cyclone, parts of central Bangladesh, including Dhaka, might experience rain on October 24 and 25.

The main body of the cyclonic storm is likely to start making landfall on October 25.

Within 50 kilometres of the centre of the storm, the wind was flowing up to 60 kilometres per hour on Tuesday afternoon.

India Meteorological Department in a bulletin issued at 4:30pm Indian time said that the weather system was 700 km southeast of Paradip of Odisha, 750 km south-south-east of Sagar Island of West Bengal and 730 km south-southwest of Khepupara of Bangladesh.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been asked to hoist signal number one. Fishing boats and trawlers have been asked to stay close to the shore so that they could move to shelters in short notice.

The IMD put Odisha and West Bengal under red alert on October 24 and 25. The red alert is the highest level of alert in terms of potential rainfall event advising people to take action against an upcoming disaster.

The IMD said that the weather system was moving slowly at a speed of 4 kmph. The system is likely to cross onto land between Puri and Sagar Island as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110kmph gusting 120kmph.
