The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday decided to launch inquiries against former liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque and former education minister Nurul Islam Nahid over allegations of amassing illegal wealth through irregularities and corruption.

The commission took the decisions after it had found primary evidence of the graft allegations against the two former ministers of the Awami League regime, ACC deputy director Akhtarul Islam said.

According to the allegations, AKM Mozammel Haque, also a former lawmaker for Gazipur-1 constituency, amassed wealth illegally by accepting commissions through corruption in different projects.

There are also allegations that, during his tenure as a minister, Mozammel issued a number of fake freedom fighter certificates in exchange for crores of taka.

Mozammel has two buildings in Joydebpur, deposits in various banks and other investments, and 792 decimals of land in Gazipur, and he has also acquired wealth in his own name and in the names of his wife, and other relatives, according to the allegations.

ACC officials said that there were allegations that former education minister Nurul Islam Nahid also amassed a huge amount of wealth illegally during his tenure as a minister and a lawmaker.

Nahid owns 5 kathas of land, including apartments in Uttara, 3 kathas of land in Nikunja, and non-agricultural land in Sylhet鈥檚 Beanibazar in his name.

Nahid has joint ownership, deposits, and other investments in his name in different banks, investments in savings certificates in his and his wife鈥檚 names as well as deposits in different banks, the officials said, referring to the allegations.

Besides, they said, Nahid allegedly laundered a huge amount of money through his brother Nazrul Islam, an expatriate in the United Kingdom, and his friend Kamal Ahmed, an expatriate in the United States.

Nahid allegedly extorted crores of taka in commission from contractors of different works.
