Under the peripheral effect of the severe cyclonic storm Dana, heavy to very heavy rainfall with gusty wind occurred over the north Bay of Bengal, offshore islands, chars and coastal areas of Bangladesh,.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department bulletin issued on Thursday evening, the cyclone was moving north-northwestward to cross the north Odisha-West Bengal coast of India.


The BMD forecast that Bangladesh’s low-lying offshore islands along the coastal districts including  Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Barguna, Barishal, Jhalakati, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Bhola, Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar were likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 2-3 feet height above normal astronomical tide.

BMD meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallik told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the cyclone would make landfall between India’s Puri and Sagar Island on Friday midnight. It would not cause severe damage to the Bangladesh coast.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra, however, have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number three until further notice.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Patuakhali correspondent reported that at least seven houses were badly damaged, three people, including two children, got injured at Deuli Ranipur village of Patuakhali‘s Mirzaganj upazila.

The injured– Ruma Begum, 28, Shamia, 5, and Ishamani 2– were sent to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Patuakhali correspondent reported.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Satkhira reported that the district experienced intermittent rainfall from Thursday morning.

Satkhira deputy commissioner Mostak Ahmed said that the district administration took all necessary preparations to deal with the cyclone.

A total of 887 cyclone shelters and relief centres were ready to shelter about five lakh people, he said.

State-owned Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that the Khulna District Development and Coordination Committee on Thursday decided to keep ready medical teams and volunteers with adequate relief materials including drinking water and dry foods in all 604 shelter centres.

All ships, fishing boats, trawlers and other vessels in the Bay of Bengal have been asked to anchor near the Mongla Port jetty until further notice.

Loading and unloading of containers from ships, however, would continue until hoisting the danger signal number 7, said Md Makruzzaman, a Mongla Port Authority official.

The district administrations in Bhola, Bagherhat and Barguna prepared 889, 359 and 673 flood shelter centers, respectively, to shelter vulnerable people, BSS reported.

In Cox’s Bazar, tidal surges have reportedly damaged a Navy jetty at Inani Beach, though no casualties were reported, according to United News of Bangladesh.

Ferry services to Saint Martins Island remained suspended to avoid adverse impacts of the cyclone.

UNB also reported that the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority authorities on Thursday morning suspended the movement of vessels on internal routes in Barishal due to inclement weather.

Heavy rainfall submerged low-lying areas including Sadar Road, Oxford Mission Road, Palashpur, Rasulpur, Mohammadpur, Kaunia, Parara Road, Rupatoli Housing, College Avenue and Battala areas in Barishal.

Since Thursday morning, the Fire Service and Civil Defence launched campaigns in disaster-prone areas of Khulna and Barishal divisions to make people aware of and alert for the cyclone, a FSCD press release said.

Cyclone-affected people were requested to call nearby fire stations or dial FSCD’s Khulna divisional control room at 01733062209 and Barishal divisional control room at 01878001111 or the Dhaka’s Central Room hotline 102 to take emergency services.
