The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday urged the interim government to complete the reform activities as early as possible to ensure a fair election soon to counter the conspiracy to destabilise the country.
BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and the party chairperson’s advisory council member Zainul Abedin Farroque made the demands while addressing separate programmes in the capital.
‘There is a conspiracy to weaken the interim government, which is disrupting the reform process. I urge Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus to stay vigilant about this,’ Farroque said.
He was addressing a sit-in programme organised by the Senbagh Forum in Dhaka in front of the National Press Club in the capital demanding the withdrawal of all cases filed against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
He also said that the government should complete reforms to the Election Commission urgently based on the opinions of the political parties to start the election process.
Farroque, also a former chief whip, demanded for bringing back former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to the country immediately.
‘Sheikh Hasina, who is involved in the enforced disappearances of Ilias Ali and Chowdhury Alam in Bangladesh and the killings of many opposition leaders and activists, was seen walking in a park in Delhi under special security,’ he said.
‘An arrest warrant has been issued by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal against Hasina. She should be held accountable under the law and punished,’ he said.
Addressing a separate programme on Friday, BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said that there was no need for much time to complete the reform activities.
He urged the interim government to take the 31-point reform proposal presented by the BNP into consideration as at least 40 parties agreed on the proposals.
‘If any modification is needed, discuss it with the political parties, and it should not take months together to complete the task,’ he said.
He made the remarks while speaking at the introductory meeting of the Munshiganj district unit of Women and Children’s Rights Forum at BNP›s central office in the capital’s Naya Paltan area.
Mentioning that BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman presented a 27-point proposal before the nation, Gayeshwar said, ‘We held a simultaneous movement then, based on the opinions of all parties, we refined the proposals and finally presented the 31-point reform proposal before the nation.’
He wanted to know why the leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League were not being arrested after banning the organisation.
BNP another standing committee member, Selima Rahman, said that the BNP formed a committee to protect women and children from oppression following the instruction of party acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
She also criticised the AL government for fairing from helicopters and killing women and children during the student-led movement in July and August.
