An activist of recently banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the Awami League, was beaten and handed over to police when she came to attend her examination at Rajshahi Government Women’s College on Sunday.

The victim is Jannatul Ferdous Priya, an activist of the BCL Rajshahi College unit.


According to the college officials and witnesses, Jannatul came to the college to attend her degree pass examination.

Meanwhile, a group of leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal, student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, took position in front of the college demanding Priya’s immediate arrest.

At one stage, some female students entered the room where Priya was attending her examination and punched her in the face and body, they said.

Members of the army and police immediately went to the college and attempted to take Priya to the Boalia model police station.

While they were heading with Priya to the police van, Priya started chanting slogans in favour of the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League.

Several female students again punched her in the face and body in front of the army and police personnel for chanting slogans, witnesses added.

Rajshahi Govt Women’s College principal Professor Zubaida Ayesha Siddika told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that some students from Rajshahi College and other institutions under the banner of Students’ Movement Against Discrimination came to her office and said that they would hand over Priya to police as the latter was accused in a case.

‘I contacted the Boalia police and the army personnel who took Priya to the police station,’ she said, adding that none beat the BCL activist inside the college campus.

Mehedi Masud, officer-in-charge of the police station, said that after the students handed over Priya to them, they had arrested her in a case filed with the police station on September 8.

He said that Priya was a named accused in the case, filed by Rajshahi College Islamic studies department student Ruhul Amin under the explosive acts.
