Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion on Monday arrested an alleged leader of a group, involved in extortion from Beijing Hotel in Uttara, Dhaka while posing as a student coordinator.

The arrested individual, identified as Shihab, 28, hails from Habiganj.


Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-1 conducted a raid in the Uttara East area and arrested Shihab at about 3:00pm on Monday, said a RAB press release.

Earlier, joint forces arrested nine persons, including two women at Beijing Hotel at about 2:00am on October 25 while other members fled the scene.

RAB-1 company commander Major Muhammad Ahnaf Rasif Bin Halim said that a group comprising between 20 and 22 people identifying themselves as student coordinators, stormed into the hotel located on Road No. 7 in Sector 3, on October 25.

‘Nine persons were arrested at the spot. Joint forces are conducting a drive to arrest others involved in the incident,’ added the RAB official.

According to the police and eyewitnesses, the group locked the hotel owner Hasib Ahsan Khan inside a room and took his phone away.

The group claimed that immoral activities were happening in the hotel and asked for TK 5,00,000. Later, they took TK 1,20,000 from the reception of the hotel.

At that time, joint forces arrested nine persons on the spot. Later, the arrested were sent to jail.

Uttara West police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Hafizur Rahman said that hotel owner Hasib filed a case against 16 people and between three and four unidentified persons on October 25.
