
Bangladesh University Grants Commission chairman Professor SMA Faiz on Monday at a workshop said that to ensure an effective learning environment, the gap between teachers and students should be minimised, and teachers should strive to meet the expectations of students by understanding them.
He said this while speaking as chief guest at the workshop held at the UGC on teacher training modules under the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation project funded by the Government of Bangladesh and the World Bank.
The distance existing in the student-teacher relationship in the classroom should be minimised. Teachers should pay attention to what the students want in the classroom, said SMA Faiz.
He also advised teachers to understand the students well, give due respect to their emotions.
UGC member Professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, Professor Mohammad Anwar Hossen and education ministry additional secretary Hasan Maruf delivered special speeches at the workshop.
Tanzimuddin Khan said that investment in education should be increased if development was to be sustainable. ‘Education should be kept at the centre to get a good position in human development index.’
He also called upon the teachers to work on the vow of teaching to produce skilled students.
Higher education in the country will be transformed through the HIT project, mentioned Anwar Hossen, urging the teachers to play an exemplary role in nation building and social justice.
Hasan Maruf said that the HIT projects had been taken up to improve the quality of higher education. He also urged those concerned in the implementation of the project to comply with the government’s rules and regulations and to ensure the efficient use of the project funds.
Presided over by the UGC SPQA department director Durga Rani Sarkar, the secretary of the commission Md Fakhrul Islam, planning and development department director Mohammad Maksudur Rahman Bhuiyan and project director of HIT project Professor Asaduzzaman spoke at the event.
Directors and nominated representatives of Institutional Quality Assurance Cell of 106 private universities of the country participated in the workshop, said a press release.
