The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday said that the decision regarding  president Muhammed Shahabuddin’s removal should not be driven by emotion.

‘Why are we creating complications regarding the president’s issue? There are many more friends of Sheikh Hasina, why are some people busy with the removal of the president only? No constitutional vacuum will be allowed in the country. No crisis will be allowed in the country ,’ BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said during an awareness raising and medical leaflet distribution programme at Azimpur in the capital.

‘It is your [interim government] responsibility to prosecute dictator Sheikh Hasina and her associates at the International Crimes Tribunal. But if we indulge more in non-issues than do our actual work, complication after complication will arise only. Sheikh Hasina does not sit idle even though she is out of the country. So we have to look at all sides, left and right,’ he said.

The country’s people would surely record the contribution of the Student Movement Against Discrimination activists in the history of democracy, he said, adding that a golden chapter would be written.

‘But we cannot act on emotion that is likely to be extra-constitutional,’ he said.

Besides, speaking at a memorial meeting, the party’s standing committee member Mirza Abbas said that the deposed Awami League would not be able to stage a comeback in Bangladesh politics if BNP and Banghladesh Jamaat-e-Islami remained united.

The Dhaka south city unit of Jamaat organised the discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, commemorating the Jamaat and BNP activists who were killed on October 28 in 2006 allegedly by the Awami League activists.

He said that BNP was willing to rebuild the country alongside its longstanding ally Jamaat in the days ahead.

‘We must strive for unity so that we can rebuild this country beautifully. Let’s work together in the interest of the nation. Together, we will make the country prosperous,’ he said.

Abbas said that although autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina fled to India, but her associates remained in the country.

‘The nation cannot progress while Hasina’s cohorts are in place in different positions, as they are devising various plots. However, if Jamaat and BNP act together, the Awami League will not be able to stage a comeback,’ he observed.

Abbas said that the nation achieved a Bangladesh without Hasina on August 5 after a long struggle and immense sacrifice.

‘We now desire a Bangladesh without the Awami League. Decent people and democracy cannot coexist with Awami League. The Awami League is actually the devil’s friend,’ he mentioned.

He also urged all other democratic parties to unite to thwart the nefarious attempt of Hasina’s cohorts and the neighbouring country.
