Two Dhaka metropolitan magistrate courts on Monday sent former state minister for primary and mass education Zakir Hossain and former home ministry senior secretary Mustafa Kamal Uddin to jail in separate murder cases.

In another case, three former leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of Awami League, were also sent to jail.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiyak sent Zakir Hossain to jail following a three-day remand concerning the murder of electrician Shamim Hawlader in Mohammadpur of Dhaka. Zakir was initially detained on October 24 from that area.

In a parallel ruling, metropolitan magistrate Monirul Islam ordered the detention of Mustafa Kamal Uddin in connection with the murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim Mollah in the capital.

Mustafa was produced before the court after a three-day remand in police custody following his arrest in Chattogram鈥檚 Lalkhan Bazar on October 24.

The BCL leaders were presented to Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Md Ragib Nur鈥檚 court, following their arrests in connection with an attack on Dhaka University students on July 15.

Dhaka University student Md Abu Sayad Bin Mahin Sarkar filed the case against 391 individuals, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, following the incident on the DU campus.
